Offspring By Mayte Castro

Springing from the difficulty of detaching from one’s family,

The building block of culture whose wave’s magnitude

extends across rivers, sand, dunes, and maritime oscillations.

Umbilical Connection to the ancestors.

Rooted in herbs, healers, sobadores, la llorona…

Facing the northern star,

Whose gaze resulted in a mirage.

Causing ripples and divides untimely,

Yet offering oasis to a parched earth.

Under the microscope the bosom carries scars that attest its sacrifice.

Offerings to the inconceivable offspring the tri color of red, white, and blue.

In a world that seeks to dilute in murky assimilation, all the while,

acknowledging the neighbor’s existence the benefit of undeniable recognition.
